Digipack

The "promo-pack" is simply a variation of a "press kit." It's used for booking shows, "shopping" for record deals and publishing deals, assembling a management and legal team, and for gaining radio and television airtime it is also anything which promotes the band to an outside audience.
The only real difference between a "press kit" and a "promo-pack" are some of the items included in each, and to whom they're sent to. All of the contents are put together in attractive looking folders which include artwork or the artists' logo on them.

''Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipacks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and one to the left, with the CD in the center portion. Usually, the portion of the digipack that hold the CD is made of plastic like a traditional jewel case CD - the plastic part is simply attached to the paper background.'' Quoted from Musicians.about.cpm/od/ah/g/digipacksleeve.htm

Many bands and labels like to use them for aesthetic reasons. The three section digipack sleeves opens up more design options because there is more room. However, they're more expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases.

The Killers album named 'Sams Town'. has a very inmteresting concept art and Digipack. The name its self can be said with some thought. As the name is 'Sams Town' it could be related to Uncle Sam which is a reference to the US army. Also it could mean 'Sams Town' the trailer park in nevada, which by the look of the front cover is what it relates to. It has a beauty pageant contestent on the front cover showing us and idealy confirming that this is in an american state and mainly one which is renouded for beauty pagents such as Nevada. There is an image of a goat which i believe to be out of place, although it may be a keen image of 'trailer trash' could be link to the trailer park in Nevada. Although i havent seen it for myself so i cannot judge wether it is a 'trashy' park.

The back of the cd cover is much link the front in terms of the background, the background seems to be the same. Although the character on the far left seems to be wearing a sash or a bullet belt this links with the female on the front cover which also has a sash, this could resemble 'trailer trash'. It also obviously shows the band which is definatly the main feature in concept art. Most of the characters faces show seriousness which may be represented in the music.

This is the cd cover of the band, Razorlight. Its from there album in 2006, called 'Up all night'. The album has many different features on the cd covers than on 'The Killers' and 'Hard-Fi'. It doesnt actually have a human characters on the cover except for the ghostly face in the Tv which may be a band member although it could be a old style Tv with the colour only in black and white. It also continues to have a black and white theme alike 'The Killers' album which we might have t0 take into context when making our cd cover. The cover also contains items such as keys which look to be from wither a hotel room or maybe car keys. It also contains old magazines which have references to old pennys and coins. It also has adverts which would be found in old comics such as a purchaseable lie detecter, it also contains a extract from a comic book. It also contains train/rail cards, tickets for various items and pictures of band members which looks like they are on tour, this idea cuold link all of these pictures into one main idea. As they are travelling on tour they are taking pictures and checking into alot of hotels, and also reading various magazines and books.

The back is alike the front with the common theme of red, this could be to introduce us to things which we may associate with the colour such as passion and love. It is also possible it isnt black and white is to stand out, attracting the readers to the passage of writing which has copyright details on it.

To begin with, the main idea of a digipak is to promote the band/artist. Therefore, on the front cover of my digipak I have decided to have a noticeable shot which will be on a key point of the video. Since the digipak is going to promote our Music video. Also, if audiences have watched the music video, then they will recognize the key moments situated on the front, therefore they shall buy the album. Many digipak covers have the band on the album, unless they happen to be really well known where featuring them on the front isn't necessary. An example of this would be "Never mind" by Nirvana which showed a baby in a swimming pool. However, all new artists would have to feature on the front, in order to be the most successful it can. Inside my digipak, I have decided to feature the use of concert and tour dates, in order to increase the promotion of ticket sales. This is also a key feature which many albums have inside. Furthermore, on the back of the digipak I will have a list of all the songs which will be played on CD. As a result, this is a common feature that is often on the back of album covers. For example, Florence + the Machine album "Lungs," and the albums such as "Now 47" which has a wide range of featuring items. Furthermore, by featuring a pinnacle moment on the front cover of the album, this will help the audience recognize the artist and could potentially build up a fan base for the unique style is represents.Ideally, I would like easily recognizable mise en scene in the background, although I need to decide which shot I would like for my pinnacle cover. The typography of "Stars of CCTV" will also be bright; I may pick yellow as this was the bands main colours in their latest album covers, so the name of the band stands out to a passing audience. It would be nice to have a continuing colour theme throughout the whole album, with the typography for tour dates inside and the name of the songs on the back to be the same colour as the name "Hard FI." Therefore, the digipak will look co-ordinate and look good aesthetically pleasing.
The mise en scene of what the front cover of my digipak will be is undecided, but I defiantly intend to include a quirky background in order for the digipak to stand out amongst other albums in the record shops.

This is my final version of my magazine advert. I scrapped the idea to use the image of Luke which is near the end of the video, I decided to use a simple design of which people will recongize from a distance. Furthermore, in the bottom corner I have used the artists name with black writing as it’s easily linked to the record label, since the idea of a magazine advert is centered around promoting the artist aswell as the album. Similarly to the digipak, I have used an image in the music video it has a overall relationship with their album; something which an audience will recognize. The street photo was taken in Brighton although our video was set in Birmingham. It contrasts against the colour; another feature which I used on my digipak. Also, with my magazine advert it only says simple things which will make the audience think i have achieved this by simply writing a catchphrase and the band name. This is also a common feature in magazine adverts; with the aim of them to promote when they are playing so this increases the ticket sales.

This front cover is stronger than the original because I originally thought the headlights were too bright for the front cover. Furthermore, I decided on using this photo of a street opposed to the headlights because this looks more professional; with the headlights looking out of place and not really fitting in with the rest of the cover. However, with the street in this focus it shows the grimeyness of where the video is set. His facial expression on the back also looks lost conveying the theme of our song "Stars of CCTV", it shows like he is a star in a movie.
This facial expression hasn't changed since my other options because I believe this is the best for my advert. The background is a brick wall here again stands out and connotes loneliness, and to increase the realism although the yellow text which is a connotation of the record label. As a result, this promotes the record label on our digipak, allowing audiences to see where the band came from. I have decided to add a clean cut title so the digipak looks neat and each face looks like they all belong together to make a digipak. Again, I have used the name of each song to feature on the back cover, as this is a running theme throughout a lot of digipak as it promotes the Hard-Fi music.

My inside cover is of druge i believed this was a good shot as in my front cover i used focus to show items in the front of the shot, however in this shot i felt it was a good idea to use focus on the background. This gives a good contrast from my original front cover.

I believe that my music video inline with the modern styles of cinematography seen in today’s other videos. Although music videos of the same genre in these modern time tend to feature alot of people with either one character and many lower ranked characters or a group and the video shows their journey. Although because of this I have decided to only have one main character. This allows the audience to be more established with the character and they can relate and understand the journey of this character rather than confusing the plot with many other characters. I also think that this makes the audience more aware of the story line as is only one character to focus on. Ive decided to edit my video to show black and white, this was an attempt to make his (the main characters) surroundings look more bleak and grim, rather than in colour which would normally show brightness of the sky and other reflective materials. I believe this makes my video unique in comperision with other videos by related artists such as the Killers and Razorlight. I think this makes the video more gritty and realistic to watch. It helps the audience to understand the feel for the video we were trying to capture with the sweatiness of the ending when he realises it wasn’t real, to the constant paranoia behind this mysterious character.

However, my music video does use some conventions of real media products in the way that the story line plays out the lyrics to the song. I believe that there is a relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals within the music video, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics. My music video follows this convention as the story narrative consists of a day in the life of the persona in the music video, and the events that unfold before him.
My main goal in editing this music video was to try and keep it close to the storyboard as possible. As some shots I captured where not like the shots I originally thought of I believed it would be a good idea to keep the common theme of keeping the shots relative to the lyrics. Like alot of real music videos within the same genre, the overall theme is that they are trying to achieve a ‘grim’ atmosphere, but some do not work and look boring. This theme of ‘grittiness’ goes well with the genre as the two are closely related, the idea of changing and creating a whole new aspect to the genre of music would have taken too long which was allocated.
I think that my combination of dynamic shots and point of view make my music video and my additional texts are are well tailored to the idea I was originally going for, it shows a step by step procedure of the day of the individual. This idea makes every part of the linking images connect, without a text to indicated the flashbacks it would be tricky to understand the video. The idea of text coming up to indicate this was mine, I thought it was a good idea to have the writing standing for at least 2 seconds to make sure the audience can acknowledge what is going on.

The media techniques I have learnt in Media would prove useful in my music video as it gave the chance to put them into practise. Here are a few examples of the different techniques I used:

This shot of the character shower leaving the door is one of my favourites as it shows the idea of the 'rule of thirds'. The pillar to the left blocks that third of the screen so more attention is given to the main character.

The shot technique used here would be a close-up/panning shot of the character in the music video. This gives the audience a dynamic shot to watch and make the video more enjoying. This type of shot is somewhat rare in music videos as the shot is normally to long for the quick cutting shots of the chasing scene.

There have been many skills that I have gained throughout doing this task as it has allowed me to experiment with different shot techniques and to test my creativity when in the design stage of the task. Originally I decided to use quite poor shots and static, but with the new confidence I used pans, quick cuts and point of view shots. Also with advice from my mentors I have learnt how to use the camera correctly the use of ; white balance, shutter speed and aperture have all been used to make my camera shots better.

I have also learnt different filming techniques. These techniques include such things as depth of field. This is when a section of the shot appears sharp in the shot. This is used to bring attention to people or items in both the for-ground and background. Another technique I have learned is focal range. This is where you have one subject that is in focus and everything else in the shot is out of focus, then you switch this around so the subject will be out of focus and everything else in the shot will appear in focus. This is used to highlight two different things within the same shot that might be of importance within a video.

Planning our Music Video

'From the dead boring outer ring of London's suburbs comes Hard-Fi. They merge disco, punk and dub until they sound like the late seventies post-punk scene having a fist fight with itself. With their lyrical themes about money not equaling or even being necessary for success, it's no surprise that the D.I.Y. masterpiece "Cash Machine" was made for $500 and has put them on the map as one of the UK's most exciting young exports. You need Hard-Fi in your life. Theyre laddish, loud and Christ they sound good.' Quoted from NME.

Target Audience of 'Hard-Fi'

The target audience for this band are generally young people. This can be proved by the average readers to magazines they have featured predominately in, this includes Q and NME which have a large audience. Q magazine has 666,000 readers weekly with 500,000 in the 15-35 age group which i will class as young. NME has a weekly audience of on average, 388,000. Of which 300,000 are in the age group of 15-35. Hard-Fi have also appeared in magazine such as ; Crud, Aced,Mojo, Rollingstone and Kerrang. These magazines are aimed at the younger audience and therefore shows that the band Hard-Fi are also aimed at young people. Also their records sales for the album ‘stars of CCTV’ in 2005 were 300,000 in the UK alone. Also having a number one for the song ‘cash machine’. With 1.2million records been sold worldwide.

Why we chose the song we did.

After vigorous searching throughout music albums and unknown bands we decided to look up bands we have either watched at a concert or live. We looked at rock songs and a band called 'Dragonforce' we thought it would be a good idea to pretend to play the songs on the famous game 'Guitar Hero' as this would be very comical, but we thought that a higher beat song that we were more familiar with would be better. So we searched on. I knew a band called 'Hold Fire' but misspelled it on Google and spelt Hardfire, after Google corrected me and said 'Do you mean Hard-Fi' we looked at their albums and saw a song called CCTV. We typed it into YouTube as time was running out and found there was no music video to it as it was not one of their most popular songs. We all realised the other songs they have done and that they were popular and decided to go with it as we were discussing ideas.

Brainstorm

This is my brainstorm. although it doesnt do a indepth review of other bands it shows 8 genres and two artists for each this give us 16 band types and genres to choose from, then i picked a song from each artists and sometimes two for an artist. Then i narrowed it down to which artists had videos for the song and some genres i did'nt want to do. It came down to The lonley Island 'Incredibad' and Hard-Fi 'Stars of CCTV'. Although i believe that Incredibad would be a good song to do and would have brought huge comedic value i thought it would have been too hard to do with alot of cuts and we would of also needed a alien outfit. The song also had profanity in it.

Lyrics

And every move that I make
Gets recorded to tape
So somebody up there
Can keep me safe,

I'm going out tonight
I've got my hair just right
I'm always looking good
For the spotlight

Stick 'em up
Give me the money
A winning smile
Up to the gallery
I'm gonna get my face on the 6 'o' clock news

We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street
We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?

On every corner, every street
Down every underpass you'll see
Somebody's stealing the show
Somebody looking like me

I'll see you out tonight
Just got the pose just right
We're always looking good
For the spotlight

We turn it on
And so we're full of speed
We fill the screen
Can't help but notice me
I'm gonna get my face on the 6 'o' clock news

We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street
Flashing blue lights, camera, action
Watching my life, main attraction
We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?

We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street
Flashing blue lights, camera, action
Watching my life, main attraction
We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?

Other Videos By 'Hard-Fi'

'Cash Machine'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z7JgJedjRc

The music video for 'Cash Machine' has dynamic shots for nearly every angle, it shows the band being told that there music has been taken and they are trying to get it back, it mainly revolves around getting a briefcase from a unknown courier. In the music video they wear white coats and past members of Parliament (Margret Thatcher, Tony Blair etc) and try to get their music back. In the video it flicks between the band playing in the robbing outfits and their actual movements in the robbing situation. With mainly long shots it could denote the task ahead and how completing it could be a 'long shot'. After finally robbing the courier and getting the briefcase they inevitably don't open it until the coast is clear and they are back at home quarters, as they open the case it seems to be the couriers lunch which they have picked up by mistake. Its mainly shot with quick cuts and brash lighting but together it fits well.

'Cant get along (without you)'

This Hard-Fi will be more of the theme that we are going for, it has a chase sequence throughout which i believe will be the key and main feature of our music video. Alike this video ours will be about the chase between two people and it will also show why and where it all started. Most of the shots used in this video repeat for both the chaser and the one being chased because it shows that they are taking the same route. Throughout the video both the characters run through houses, building tops and streets, alike our video, although we will not be running across the rooftops. The lighting is mainly natural with most of the scenes are in the streets, although it looks lighting there is most defiantly artificial lighting or reflectors to bring out certain features. In both of these videos it shows violence in the act of stealing theft, or physical violence, although our video will not contain much violence but mainly drug use.

Mise-en-scene of my Music Video.
I have a vision on what i believe will make our music video work. I believe that having a video predominately at night will give our music video a new edge although 'Hard-Fi' music videos are not normally at night. As our music is called 'Stars of CCTV' i believe a CCTV style of video would be better, although deciding angles, lighting and such other issues will test us. In our video i believe night would be best although it may not be practical as our group members might already be committed to other things at night, but filming our music video at college or a near location wouldn't give our video a legitimate feel. As our video stars a 17-19year old male we will have clothing which would be usual to this, although we are stereotyping our male as a trouble causer because he is constantly being watched by the cameras. We will need clothing such as: hoodies, jean or a tracksuit. We will aim to get a new style of filming and not a tradition long shots and longs. This will reflect and bring forth the idea of which genre we are relating to. We will try and relate our video in other forms by repeating the chase scene which is in 'Cash Machine' and 'Cant get along without you' this will show consistency through out video and may be recognized as a Hard-Fi video this will hopefully reinforce our aim to the target audience.

This is a link to a pdf file of our presentation which we created for a pitch to an record label.^^

Above is the video to our presentation of our pitch.

These are the first 6 shots of my storyboard it jumps in by looking at the camera and taking a cameras view of a young man. It shows him turning and looking around to see if hes being watched or being followed. The next shots are of him picking up the pace and starting to jog away almost known if he doesnt want to be caught on camera, he seems spaced out but we do not know yet why he is acting like this. We see him run past the camera in an almost dynamic shot. It then goes into the first of our flashbacks. I(t shows our main character earlier on in the day doing his hair and looking into a mirror, almost sizing himself up for the night ahead. These six shots end with the main character doing his hair and the line ' ive got my hair just right' which syncs with the music well.

The next 6 shots are very different from the original 6 as these include a much different scenary. It starts with the main character walking through the door, he seems happy and joyful about the night to come. It cuts to a shot of him causeing havoc down a street with him kicking over bins and making a mess of the sidewalk, ( this maybe difficult to film as we do not currently have a location with bins which can be destructed). Our next shot will be the hardest as we have a news reporter and a desk, we need to find a older gentlemen which can be our anchor man, we also needs shots of our previous scene in the top right hand corner for a real news vibe. It cuts from this to an action shot of the legs of our main character he is currently running away but we do not know yet what from. IT ends with our amin character taking refuge on a bench after he fell over it, it continues with hgim running away and out of sight.

These shots are mainly flashbacks from and even earlier date, we see in these shots the main character running around the corner from before then stop and taking a break, a flash of light appears and becomes a flashback. We see our main character in his bed asleep (this gives the idea that it is in the morning). It cuts to him walking out of the shower and then drying and getting dressed. The last shot of of the six is of our main character taking drugs, this may give an idea of why he is acting mad in the earlier shots.

This load of shots starts which the character still in the flashback he is lying on his bed buzzing from the drugs he has just had, it zooms in on his face to see his eyes. We will achieve this by useing makeup, we will try to reproduce the affect aestheically from charcoal and a whiting agent. After the flash back it shows him running away, by now we know its because of his drugs use but we dont know who he is running from. The next shot of him running past a car was originally supposed to be a police car, but the likelyness of finding a police car will to help was minimal so we changed it to a normal car. We then have more close ups to try and show that the mian chacter is getting skecty around cars and is quite unstable. The enxt shot is the most risky with a car coming into comtact with the main character, it shows him going over the bonnet, this will be one of the most defining shots in the music video.

The last 4 shots are all around the main character being hit by a car, although it could be a dangerous shot. For safety reasons we believe that we can only do this shot by having a stationary car, although it will not give the same effect from a car in motion. The second shot is of the characters face he is confused and in pain, we next see the 2 headlights zooming towards our main character this is to represent his end, or either the drug fuelled trip hes having or his life. After this shot we see a flash of light and a cut to our main character in the mirror looking sweaty and confused, this gives the audienace an idea wether it is either a close shave and he escaped or it was a dream. The conclusion is up to the audience.
